Founded in 1626 by Roger Conant, Salem has a rich history that includes a key role in the spice trade with the East Indies, being the birthplace of the National Guard and the home of the infamous Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692. Today, Salem is a vibrant urban community with a bustling downtown full of an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. Our waterfront is no longer a hub of the spice trade but is still very active with both recreational and commercial uses.
Each year, over a million visitors from around the globe visit Salem. During their stay tourists visit our world-famous museums, are fascinated by the City’s historic architecture and learn about Salem’s past.
